SOCIAL ISSUES IN TODAY’S SOCIETY AND COMPLAINT POEMS TO KÖROĞLU

Abstract

This study examines complaint poems directed to Köroğlu, a celebrated figure in Turkish heroic folk tales known for his support of the oppressed and opposition to the wealthy and tyrannical. Köroğlu's tales, widely recounted across the Turkic world in various languages, reflect his broad appeal and enduring relevance. Despite extensive research, Köroğlu's identity remains ambiguous, with some scholars considering him a Janissary and others a folk hero. His legend, spanning around 200 versions, suggests he is a fictional character created by Turkish imagination. This study focuses on 37 complaint poems addressed to Köroğlu by various minstrels, including the most prolific poets Mustafa Aydın and Temelî. The poems cover a wide range of themes, such as morality, change-fashion, livelihood-trouble-distress, corruption, life, external forces-national issues, heroism, technology-production, art-music, nature, and longing-desire for Köroğlu. These complaints highlight the role of the minstrel tradition in expressing public emotions, expectations, and criticisms, reinforcing Köroğlu's influence in folk poetry. The diversity and depth of the complaints underscore Köroğlu's significant place in people's hearts and his role in addressing contemporary societal issues. This study enhances our understanding of how minstrel poetry reflects societal concerns and its impact on collective consciousness. Selected poems illustrate Köroğlu's continued relevance as a symbol of justice and virtue.
